Experimental particle physics and quantum mechanics
CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay in tellurium-130. It's one of the most sensitive detectors in the world, operating at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Italy.
The detector uses 988 tellurium dioxide crystals (~742 kg total) cooled to ~10 milliKelvin, making it the coldest cubic meter in the known universe. These crystals work as bolometers, detecting tiny temperature changes from particle interactions.
Data Analysis and Simulations
Developed a method to extract results from previously unused data using Monte-Carlo simulations and Bayesian statistical models. Worked with high-performance computing clusters at NERSC.
Signal Optimization and Filtering
Implemented a multi-channel filter to enhance signal detection efficiency. Built a filter that removes correlated noise and integrated it into the analysis framework.
Real-time Data Monitoring System
Designed and implemented a real-time monitoring system handling ~10k parameters. Used C++, Python, and JavaScript with automated alerts and network resilience.
Detector Development
Helped build and deploy the detector, collaborated on optimization over 10+ years with an international research team.
Quantum Interference and Entanglement (QIE) Experiment
Design and documentation work at Berkeley's Advanced Lab. The experiment focuses on demonstrating violations of Bell's inequalities using Mach-Zehnder and Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometers.
Teaching
Graduate Student Instructor for junior and senior level undergraduate physics courses at UC Berkeley. Also worked as a peer tutor for student athletes and community college students.
